The studio had actually already tried its hand at the real-time tactics genre with the game Battletech: The Crescent Hawks' Revenge (1990), which served as something of prototype for the game that would define the genre two years later, but which wasn't a huge success itself. Westwood Studios' main claim to fame prior to 1992 was the dungeon crawling RPG Eye of the Beholder (1991) and its sequel The Legend of Darkmoon (1991), which are often considered some of the best 90s RPGs. This would finally change when Westwood Studios took a shot at the genre, and in doing so turned a formerly niche sub-genre into one with genuine mainstream potential.
